Jack And Jill: Deconstruct

Written & Directed by: Ryland Alexander

JACK & JILL: DECONSTRUCT

A new creation at the 2009 Edmonton International Fringe Theatre Festival

Venue #10: Fission Media Stage (Planet Ze Design Centre), 10055 80 Avenue

Twice now Alberta collective The System Theatre has wowed audiences at the Edmonton Fringe with its fearless and high octane approach to theatre production. Recall 2007’s risqué, controversial and double Sterling-nominated The Creation of the World and Other Business and 2008’s sophisticated ‘Art’. This August, The System Theatre, once again aided by some of Alberta’s hottest young talent, plans to break down and reinvent the process of storytelling and paint for you the blackest of comedy. Jack & Jill: Deconstruct marks the culmination of The System Theatre’s “Creation Series” and the company’s boldest work to date.

Jack and Jill went up the hill to fetch a pail of water…

The System Theatre will hold up the mirror to show you the carefree child you were – then smash identity and myth into pieces: fragmented and breathtaking. Jack & Jill: Deconstruct will reveal the sordid elements and darker tones flowing through the most innocent rhymes. This is the part your imagination can’t remember – a world of play, of farce, of magic – and of danger. There will be laughter, but gasps may follow. Jack & Jill: Deconstruct will show you the reality you cannot hide from – and reality has a giant puppet monster. Child’s play this is not.

Jack fell down and broke his crown and Jill came tumbling after…

COMEDY OF ERRORS and
TITUS ANDRONICUS

Comedy of Errors

Giving two sets of twins the same names is likely to generate infuriating opportunities for inaccurate identification, but, in Shakespeare's hands, the mischief and mayhem result in a much-loved work of farce and slapstick.

Director Jeff Page takes audiences on a madcap adventure to Edmonton circa 1915, suffragette city, with the brothers Antipholus and Dromio, as they reunite with their families in the most inefficient manner possible.

Comedy of Errors previews on July 1 and opens on July 3, it runs on the odd dates at 8 pm and all Saturday and Sunday matinees at 2pm.

Titus Andronicus

In Rome, it is election day, for Caesar as dead, and a new emperor must be chosen.  Caesar’s sons Saturninus and Bassianus declare themselves candidates for the new empery.

Shakespeare's Titus Andronicus challenges its audience to bear witness to barbarism and vengeance. In a post-modern world created by Director Marianne Copithorne, Titus blurs the line between justice and retribution, asking if humanity is born of pure heart or profound hate.

Titus Andronicus previews on June 30 and opens July 2. It is performed on even dates at 8 pm, evenings only.

“Aim for what you want…Everybody gets a shot”

ASSASSINS Music and Lyrics by STEPHEN SONDHEIM Book by JOHN WEIDMAN

The University of Alberta Studio Theatre closes out the 2008/2009 season with a bang! Assassins – a bold musical from Stephen Sondheim about the people who killed or attempted to kill the President of the United States, blasts onto the mainstage May 14 - 23, 2009 at 7:30 pm in the University of Alberta’s Timms Centre for the Arts (87 Avenue & 112 Street).

From the opening number set in a shooting gallery to the provocative tune of “C’mere and Kill the President,” Sondheim delivers a captivating portrait of nine notorious killers in our culture; historical figures that are as much a product of the American Dream as the famous leaders they aim to kill.

Musicals are a rare occurrence for the UofA Studio Theatre and this production, directed by MFA Directing candidate Clinton Carew (BFA Acting ‘95) as his thesis project, promises to be a dazzling spectacle, with Carew also playing the Proprietor. Musical Direction is by Ryan Sigurdson.

Assassins premiered off-Broadway in 1990 and was met with a lukewarm reception from American audiences then steeped in a pre-Gulf war patriotic climate. A later production in London was far more acclaimed. A Broadway production planned for 2001 was deemed too controversial in the 9/11 aftermath and postponed until 2004, eventually earning Michael Cerveris a Tony Award for his performance as John Wilkes Booth. Assassins was recently revived in London’s West End in 2008.

The Studio Theatre cast features: Paul Bellows (Hinckley), Tara Brodin B Ed ’97 (Moore), Paul Morgan Donald (Byke), Andrew Mecready (Guiteau), Laura Raboud (Chorus, Herold), Garrett Spelliscy BFA Acting ’08 (Czolgosz), Jon Lachlan Stewart (Booth), Farren Timoteo (Zangara), Paul Welch BFA Acting ’07 (Chorus), current BA Drama students Holly Cinnamon (Chorus), current BFA Acting students Adam Cope (Chorus), Elliott James (Chorus, Ford), Robert Markus (Chorus, Billy), Karyn Mott (Fromme), recent BFA Acting graduates Joel Crichton (Balladeer), Joshua Dalledonne (Oswald), Joëlle Préfontaine (Goldman), and current UofA Art & Design student Allison Leggatt (Chorus).

Sets, lights and projected media are designed by Professor Lee Livingstone (MFA Theatre Design ‘73), costumes are designed by Professor Robert Shannon (MFA Theatre Design ‘85) and the soundscape is designed by Matthew Skopyk (BFA Technical Theatre Production ‘06). The production is stage managed by recent BFA Technical Theatre Stage Management graduate Dawn Friesen, assisted by current BFA Technical Theatre Stage Management student Emma Deobald.
